Funny Story

Emily Henry can write anything and I know I will read it.

This is one of my favorite books by Emily Henry, I have read all of them and I must confess that it is very easy to get trapped inside its pages. Funny Story tells the story of Miles and Daphne and the madness of finding themselves in the situation the book narrates.

Funny Story tells the story of the impossibility of two people, who have nothing in common but their broken hearts and their journey to acceptance. Is it a funny story? Umm...not exactly and that's where the trick is. To be honest, I'm glad the book went inside the minds of Miles and Daphne, getting to know them both and understanding where they come from is key to understanding why they do what they do, because if we try to look at it from the outside. What we would find would be two people who do not have the emotional capacity to connect with what is going on around them.

Daphne is the character in which most of the actions lie, at the beginning it is understandable that she is in the emotional place she is in. As the story progresses you begin to understand why, and when the mystery of her life it's hard not to feel like a part of you has been left behind. I know how it feels, and because I know how complicated it is Daphne became a great window to see and understand this situation, while Miles is as mysterious as he is charming, his story does nothing but break your heart, because as I said the story is not as funny as it seems.

The situation with this book is that although its genre is humorous, and it can be seen as a romance book, there is much more to explore within the story of its protagonists. One of those themes is forgiveness and letting go. It is so hard to recognize that sometimes it is better not to stay, but a part of us wants to stay because we often think it is our fault. This book explores things like knowing how to recognize when you find yourself in a relationship whether it's a toxic romantic or family relationship. It's easy, looking the other way because ignoring it is less painful than facing it.

Emily Henry has a great instinct for knowing when to give and keep ideas and let the story breathe, which is good because sometimes the story can feel completely repetitive and sometimes it feels like we're running in circles and trying to drag out situations that could have been resolved earlier.

The characters are solid, and their interactions are good, though not all the time. The good thing is that there are things going on all the time, that it's easy to get lost among all the things going on inside the minds of our protagonists.

All this to say that this book, is solid despite its flaws. If you are a fan of Emily Henry, I don't have to convince you to read it, if you are new and curious, welcome and give a chance to a book that doesn't ask for much of your time.
